Master's Degree

The Masters in Economics is a two-year program. During this time the student must cover core courses in economic theory and econometrics. In total, each student must complete 28 credits, 16 in obligatory taught courses and at least 12 credits in elective courses. The vast majority of courses must be undertaken in the first two semesters, allowing students to focus on their dissertation in the second year. The obligatory disciplines cover two courses in Economic Theory (Macroeconomics I and Microeconomics II), two courses in Quantitative Methods (Mathematics and Econometrics I) and Dissertation Seminars.

All students are required to write a dissertation based on extensive research carried out under the supervision of a tutor. Upon completion, students must pass a public viva examination.

Doctoral Degree

The Doctorate (PhD) in Economics is a four-year program. During this time students must wide variety of obligatory and elective courses. The doctoral degree includes three focus areas: 

  • Applied Economics;
  • Regional and Urban Economics and Development;
  • Economic History, Political Economy and History of Economic Thought.

Students enrolled in each one of these areas must complete a total of 40 credits, 16 in obligatory common taught courses, at least in 12 area elective courses, and 12 in common elective course. credits in elective courses. Students are expected to complete most of the credits in the first 18 months in order to allow time for research to be carried out to produce a thesis.

All students are required to write a thesis based on extensive research carried out under the supervision of a tutor. Upon completion, students must pass a public viva examination.
